Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries that require flat tombstones typically publish specific dimensional regulations: maximum marker size, minimum thickness, acceptable granite varieties, and permitted surface finishes. These rules vary from one institution to the next, and failing to confirm them before ordering can result in a marker that must be remade or modified. Flat Memorials reviews the current regulations at your cemetery before designing your flat tombstone, ensuring every specification is built into the stone from the start.

Foundation Requirements

Flat tombstones must be set in prepared beds at or below the surrounding grade. Bed preparation methods specified by New Jersey cemeteries include compacted gravel with leveling sand, poured concrete sub-bases, and in some institutions a combination of both. Our installation crew prepares settings to the cemetery's stated method, sets the stone level, and documents the completed installation with photographs for your family's records.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Flat tombstones are accepted in faith-affiliated cemeteries throughout New Jersey. Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Orthodox institutions across Morris and Bergen counties — as well as throughout the state — have flat-marker sections that accommodate religious symbols, companion inscriptions, and custom designs. Flat Memorials confirms the appropriateness of all imagery with the cemetery's office before production begins.

Flat Headstone / Marker

A flat tombstone is a horizontal granite memorial placed level with the cemetery ground, its polished face carrying the inscription upward where it is visible to all who approach the grave. The form is simultaneously the most understated and one of the most permanent memorials available — lying quietly in the grass but made of granite that will outlast the trees around it. At Flat Memorials, flat tombstones are produced in single-grave formats for individual memorials and in wider companion formats for married couples. Standard single-grave flat tombstone dimensions in New Jersey cemeteries typically range from 12 to 24 inches wide by 18 to 36 inches long, with 3 to 4 inch thickness. Companion flat tombstones are proportionally wider. The polished upper face is the memorial's primary surface: it carries the name, dates, epitaph, faith symbols, and any other carved elements the family chooses. India Black granite's consistent dark surface makes it the most popular flat tombstone material in New Jersey — the contrast between polished black surface and carved white-painted lettering is visible from a standing position in challenging light conditions including overcast skies and dusk. All flat tombstones are available in upright, slant, and flat formats — though the flat format is the defining characteristic of this category — and all are produced from American-made granite to the cemetery-compliant specifications confirmed for every receiving institution.

Granite Options

American-made granite for flat tombstones at Flat Memorials is sourced with attention to surface quality on the polished face — the dimension that matters most for a marker read from above. India Black granite is our most frequently specified variety for flat markers: its fine, uniform grain produces a surface that polishes to a mirror finish, holds carved lettering with maximum contrast, and maintains that quality for decades. Mountain Gray granite is a versatile alternative that suits traditional cemetery settings and complements a wide range of lettering styles. Dakota Mahogany, with its warm reddish-brown character, adds organic warmth to designs that benefit from a less formal palette. All are available as American-made granite at our Morris County showroom.

Custom Design Process

Every flat tombstone design at Flat Memorials begins with a consultation — in English, Russian, or Polish, at our Morris County showroom or by telephone. We gather the cemetery's specific dimensional requirements, your stone color preference, the inscription content, any symbols or imagery to incorporate, and any pre-planning considerations if the marker will serve a couple and one partner is still living. Our design team produces a scaled drawing of the marker's face showing every element for your approval. No production step begins without your confirmed approval of the drawing.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Every flat tombstone produced at Flat Memorials follows a disciplined six-step sequence. First: the consultation, where we document all design details and the cemetery's requirements. Second: the scaled design drawing, reviewed and approved by your family before any stone is touched. Third: granite preparation — the selected American-made slab is evaluated for face quality and prepared for carving. Fourth: hand-carving — lettering, borders, symbols, and any portrait or scene work are executed by our artisans. Fifth: finishing — letter fills, surface polish, and inspection against the approved drawing. Sixth: installation — the marker is transported to the cemetery, the bed is prepared by our crew to the institution's specification, the stone is set level and flush with the surrounding ground, and a photograph of the completed installation is sent to your family.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“We were concerned that a flat tombstone might not have the presence we wanted for my father. Flat Memorials showed us photos of their completed flat markers and we immediately understood — the black granite, the deep lettering, the carved Irish harp he would have loved. It is a beautiful memorial, quiet and strong.” — Michael, Hudson County NJ
